Conservancy and Community

Toilets

It's a sad fact that many members of our society are forced to use the bush while going about their daily 'business'.

From the courier driver, trapped in fulfilling punishing schedules to the gardener whose culture doesn't allow him to use the "boss's" bathroom, and the subsistence angler who cannot leave her fishing spot for long to answer the call of nature, these people soil the wild areas and make them unuseable for others.

Recognising the problem, the Conservancy sought permanent solutions from the municipality but none could be provided from overstretched budgets.

So, Conservancy members have rallied around and installed rental toilets. Now our natural areas are accessible to all and serious health risks have been drastically reduced.

Trails

The Conservancy has created various walking trails, with more to come. Our trails allow residents, community and visitors to experience the magic of water, fynbos and estuary. The trails offer respite from the built environment and places to sit quietly in nature's sounds and shapes.

Education

There is sad lack of understanding of the natural systems that make our planet work. Species tend to be seen in isolation and without the interrelationships that are necessary for survival.

The Island Conservancy has taken on the task of educating and informing our residents and visitors wherever possible. From interpretative signage to information sessions with interesting speakers we spread the word about our fragile natural environment. Children are included in cleanups and walks in nature.

Conservation Support

An urban conservancy with a rapidly growing human population brings with it many opportunities for service to the community, both human and 'natural'! Injured tortoises and birds, bats in houses, and, more rarely, snakes all present challeges that the Conservancy helps with. We also provide advice on what to plant and how to get rid of problem plants in gardens.

We often find ourselves providing these services outside of the Island and its residents. The whole of Sedgefield has similar issues and we work with Cola Myola Conservancy and other bodies to keep people happy and nature buzzing along.
