We hope you will enjoy this unique suburb, situated in the Cape Floral Kingdom, an ecosystem that has been recognized internationally as a World Heritage Site, and which therefore merits conservation.
A group of committed conservationists on The Island got together and applied to CAPE NATURE to register the Island as a Conservancy:
Sedgefield Island Conservancy was registered in 2003 and is part of the Garden Route Conservancy Forum, the representative gathering of all conservancies from Mosselbay to the Crags. They are in turn, part of the greater movement to establish mega-reserves from the Cederberg in the Western Cape to Addo in the Eastern Cape with the focus to link large areas for conservation.
Community-driven
Ours is a community driven project, with members working from personal conviction and commitment. It is not a policing body and seeks to work together with common purpose.
The Conservancy values involvement in the community and with stakeholders, while involving the community and stakeholders in the Conservancy’s work.
What is a Conservancy?
A Conservancy is established by a voluntary agreement between two or more landowners to manage the environment. The most important parts of that definition are that it is a voluntary agreement and that it is there for management of the environment. Conservancies are overseen by CapeNature.
