Trails

We have some trails on The Island. Gentle, short trails that celebrate the beauty and biodiversity of The Island.

All you big hikers out there, don't get too excited - these are short walks that are designed to get urbanites into nature to soak up the peace. With that in mind, go and walk on our trails, but take it slowly, look at the flowers and really look at what surrounds you.

In each of the trails, you will be walking in the dune fynbos that we have on The Island. Dune fynbos is an interesting crossover between the smaller fynbos species found in the mountains and larger, coastal scrub species.

Enjoy the walk!

Linda's Trail

Description

Named after Linda, the Conservancy's treasurer, who started cutting a smoother for herself and for others who have mobility issues, this trail offers a unique experience as it weaves through the dune fynbos and coastal scrub towards the mudflats and reed beds. There it turns right, through a milkdood thicket to thesghore of the estuary. Depending on how you countthem, there are at least 4 different biomes along this short walk.

Location

150m to the first bench, 250m to the second bench, giving a round trip of about 500m.

Flat and easy with some tripping hazards. We try to keep this trail, up to the first bench, accessible to people with impaired mobility: It is wide enough for mobility scooters/wheelchairs and flat enough to be reasonably useable with crutches/sticks. Please be careful!

There are two entry points: at the Bird Sanctuary sign in President Steyn Street and at the toilet under the big tree on the corner of Charles te Water and President Steyn street.

Padloper Tortoise Trail

Description

In each of the trails, you will be walking in the dune fynbos that we have on the Island. Dune fynbos is an interesting mixture of the smaller fynbos species found in the mountains and larger, coastal scrub species.

Angulate Tortoise Trail

Description

The Angulate Tortoise Trail is a work in process. Situated in the western Envirograden, it will enter the Envirogarden at two places in Delarey Street, mirroring the existing Padloper Tortoise Trail. The vegetation on the western end of the Envirogarden is quite different from that in the eastern Envirogarden, being bushier and dense. The trail will exit in van Niekerk Street, at Louw Wepener Street.

We expect to have it usable by the beginning of spring 2025.
