Tortoises Species

South Africa has 13 tortoise species but only 2 of these are considered native to The Island and a third species is a visitor that's worth a mention.

Angulate Tortoise (Chersina angulata)

If you see a tortoise in this part of the world, it is almost sure to be an angulate tortoise. Its name probably comes from the (tri)angular pattern around its carapace (or ‘shell’). Their carapace colouring ranges from highly contrasting, like the one in the picture, to a yellowish brown with much less obvious markings. The female tortoise digs a hole to lay her single, round egg, which takes between 90 to 200 days to incubate, depending on the season.

Residents are encouraged to have holes under their fences to allow tortoises to come and go as they look for food or mates.

Because these tortoises are the most common on The Island, they are also the most vulnerable to cars, dogs and people.

Parrot-Beaked Tortoise/Common Padloper (Homopus areolatus)

Much less common, but still a 'local', is the parrot-beaked tortoise or common padloper. These smaller tortoises have a beak-shaped mouth and much rounder shell. They exhibit a big range of colouring variants across the Western Cape.

Weighing in at a massive 20kg, the Leopard Tortoise is the biggest South African tortoise and the fourth biggest in the world. These tortoises are not native toSedgefield but they are sometimes seen in the area. If you do see one, please notify the Conservancy so that we can get it moved to a safer place.
